What date does it fall?
In 2025, Ash Wednesday corresponds to March 5, and begins Lent. On this date, the faithful Catholics go to the temples to place ash on the cross -shaped forehead.
Some of the most common practices that are held this day are:
- Attend a special mass.
- Imposition of ash.
- Pray.
- Refrain from eating meat.
- Perform sentences.
In the book of Genesis of the Bible, ash is considered a sign of humility, representing the origin and end of the human being: “God formed man with dust of earth” (Gen 2,7); “Until you returned to earth, because you were done” (Gen 3,19).
How is the date of Ash Wednesday determined?
Every year the date usually changes, since a calculation is made in relation to the lunar cycle. Ash Wednesday is determined by counting back 46 days from resurrection or Easter Sunday, excluding Sundays.
On Resurrection Sunday corresponds to the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere. The equinox occurs around March 20.
These are the dates of the next Ash Wednesday until 2030:
2026 – February 18
2027 – February 10
2028 – March 1
2029 – February 14
2030 – March 6
