When do the posadas start?
The inns will begin on Tuesday, December 16 2025 and will be celebrated every night until December 24, just before Christmas Eve. This period does not change from one year to the next, since it corresponds to the nine days that symbolize the novena prior to the birth of Jesus.
In Mexico, many families, schools, companies and government agencies organize events weeks in advance. As December 16 approaches, commercial activity intensifies, especially in the purchase of piñatas, seasonal fruits, lights, candles, punch, candy and bonuses.
Dates with tradition
The inns They have their origin in the viceregal erawhen Augustinian and Franciscan friars promoted special celebrations in December to facilitate evangelization in New Spain. These nine days were established to commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph when they were looking for a lodging before the birth of the Baby Jesus.
However, the celebration was mixed with elements of indigenous festivities and community practices, giving rise to the current version: a mixed and family celebration. Over time, the tradition expanded throughout the country, adapting to each region without losing its essence.
