Venezuela, Maduro, WhatsApp

MADRID, Spain.- The ruler of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said This Tuesday, Maduro reported that the instant messaging app WhatsApp is being used to threaten military personnel, police officers and community leaders in the country. In a speech to supporters of Chavez, Maduro asked the population to eliminate the platform voluntarily, progressively and radically, suggesting the use of alternatives such as Telegram and WeChat.

“They are threatening the Venezuelan military family, all officers, through WhatsApp; they are threatening the police family through WhatsApp; they are threatening street leaders, community leaders, and through WhatsApp they are threatening anyone who does not speak out in favor of fascism,” the president declared. He added that the threatening messages come from countries such as Colombia, the United States, Peru and Chile, where, according to him, “cowards hide behind anonymity.”

Maduro announced that he would delete WhatsApp from his phone and gradually migrate his contacts to other platforms: “I am going to break relations with WhatsApp because they are using it to threaten Venezuela. It is necessary to do so, say no to WhatsApp, WhatsApp out of Venezuela.”

Then, in a live appearance, he showed the screen of his mobile phone looking for the application. “WhatsApp, here you are, little one,” he said. “WhatsApp, technological imperialism, you are attacking Venezuela, they gave you all the lists,” he added and proceeded to uninstall the application. “Here it says uninstall… You left, WhatsApp, if I have seen you I don’t remember, I am free of WhatsApp, I am at peace, free of WhatsApp,” he said.

He also attacked other social networks, accusing them of being instruments to promote hatred and fascism. “The main instruments that multiply hatred and fascism, and the attempt to divide Venezuelans, are TikTok and Instagram,” he said.

Maduro’s intervention occurs in a context of growing political tension in Venezuelamarked by the recent presidential elections. The results issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE), an institution that serves the Venezuelan regime, have been denounced worldwide for electoral fraud.
