What you should know about the earthquake in Peru

Early today, Sunday, November 28, 2021, a strong earthquake was felt in Peru, which was also felt in Ecuador.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale shook at dawn today, Sunday, November 28, 2021, the Amazon of Peru.

  • The earthquake was registered at 05:52 local time (same time in Ecuador) and its epicenter was located 98 km east of Sta. Maria de Nieva, in Condorcanqui, Amazonas.
  • According to the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador, the epicenter was located 290 km east of Loja.
  • The earthquake was felt in several cities in Ecuador. According to users on the social network Twitter, the earthquake affected Napo, Cuenca, Guayaquil and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas; and in cities of the Sierra like Quito and Ibarra.
  • In Loja, southern Ecuador, there was a destroyed house, a damaged family (Saraguro canton), the collapse of the church tower of Colegio La Dolorosa and damage to the masonry of several houses (Loja canton).
  • In Zamora Chinchipe, the structural collapse of the facade of a house was verified.
  • The ECU-911 in Loja published a video of the monitoring of the city, where “citizens were seen evacuating in different parts of the province of Loja” due to the earthquake this Sunday.
  • User reports from Colombia indicate that they also felt the earthquake this morning, in cities such as Bogotá, Barquisimeto, Pasto and the Amazon of that country.
  • There are no tsunami warnings so far. The Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy (Inocar) indicated that the earthquake in Peru does not meet the necessary conditions to generate a phenomenon of these characteristics on the country’s coasts.
  • In Ecuador, the National Service for Risk and Emergency Management is monitoring the event, according to information published on Twitter.
  • The Municipality of Guayaquil reported on the temporary closure of the San Eduardo, Santa Ana and El Carmen vehicle tunnels as a preventive protocol to carry out reviews and ensure their safe use after the earthquake.
  • The President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, confirmed through Twitter that, in addition to Loja, it has been possible to monitor damage to infrastructures in Zamora Chinchipe. Constant monitoring and coordination between mayors and governors has been requested.
  • In Lima, capital of Peru, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 was registered. Its epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, 44 kilometers west of Callao, the neighboring port city.
