What would they do in the place of José Daniel Ferrer those who criticize him today?

UNPACU rejects its designation as a "organization linked to terrorism" and demands the liberation of its leader

To those who today reproach their decision to accept exile and say they feel disappointed by Ferrer, everything that he did bravely did for years in the fight against tyranny did not enough

Havana.- Indiantes for unfair are many of the comments on social networks that question José Daniel Ferrerthe imprisoned leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), and reproach him for his decision to accept exile so as not to continue prolonging the suffering of his family.

José Daniel Ferrer, one of the 75 prisoners of the repressive wave of the spring of 2003, was imprisoned again the July 11, 2021. After being put on probation, last April he was returned to prison. Since then he has been subject to beatings, psychological torture and all kinds of cruel abuse, with danger to his life, while his family has been continuously threatened and victim of reprisals.

To those who today reproach their decision to accept banishment and say they feel disappointed by Ferrer, everything that he bravely did for years in the fight against tyranny and in favor of the most disadvantaged, nor everything that has resisted in jail without claudicating is not enough. No: they wanted another dead to turn it into a martyr.

Regarding the criticism of Ferrer – many of them based on the same arguments used by the regime to discredit it -, the questions and disqualifications to the internal opposition have emerged from certain sectors of exile. They repeat the sonsonete that the opposition is unusual, fragmented and penetrated by state security; They reproach his lack of organization and coherence, and that he has not been able to conquer the masses, break fear and apathy, and channel popular discontent to take him to the streets.

There are those who come to ensure that the only true opposition to Castroism was that of the armed groups of the 1960s, and that the other-the civic-civilist and the non-obedience of the last four decades-has been a fraud.

It amazes the relentless demanding that are with the internal opposition some ultra-Radicals and “come-candella” of today that, for the most part, when they were in Cuba, little or nothing they did against the dictatorship. It would be necessary to see what they would be capable if they were in the skin of José Daniel Ferrer or any of the more than a thousand men and women locked in the dungeons of tyranny.

It is known that the opposition is perfect; Do not fall into idealizations. It must be admitted that hypercritics are right in what they say. We cannot deny that the opposition seems ankylosed, afflicted by an arthritis as paralyzing as that of the regime itself.

Sometimes it gives the impression that Castroism and the opposition – despite their abysmal differences – have made tables in the bassoon. Both are at their worst. But it is almost a feat that opponents in Cuba, perennially harassed, without resources and counting only with their body to receive the blows, resist, persist and manage to tie, even if it is zero, the unequal game they hold against a matrer, unprerenped and perverse dictatorship, which is not measured when it comes to being cruel.

That resilience of the opposition – which could not erase it – is only explained by its moral superiority about repressors.

It is true that in the opposition, both inside and outside Cuba, in addition to infiltrates, there are complex, demagogues, inflators, rascals, scammers and traffic them. They are not a majority, but there were and there are. How were there going to be, if the degraded Cuban society is full of them? Totalitarian dictatorships are prodigal to create, in addition to submissive and demoralized beings, psychotic and paranoid personalities.

With those oxen – and despite them – in an arid land for frustrations and full of rocks and weeds, he had to plow the opposition. And it has prayed, although the grooves have not come out as straight as we would like.

Without pretending comparisons, remember that some of the ultra-Radicals who criticize José Daniel Ferrer today are the same as a few years ago criticized and doubted Oswaldo Payá-a decent and worthy man where there are-, who managed to dislodge the regime with the Varela project, and who have also tried to denigrate with ruins and opportunists

Hypercritical – always ready for disappointment – that today scrutinize in the village gossip and in Cubadebate In search of defects and errors of José Daniel Ferrer, they should know that there is no reason to expect opposition leaders to be holy, infallible, virtuous or invested with superhuman powers. Even less should expect others to make the sacrifices that they themselves would not be able to do.
