What to do if your vehicle “floods”

Qué hacer si tu vehículo se «ahoga»

SANTO DOMINGO.- Due to the intense and unexpected rains last Friday, more than 800 vehicles were flooded, for which the insurance and reinsurance specialist, Félix Correa, offered some recommendations in these cases.

Correa specified that the first thing a person affected by an event of this nature should do is review their insurance policy or go to their insurance company to see if they have coverage against natural disasters.

He clarified that legal insurance does not cover these types of risks and only some insurances with the full plan have it.

He explained that within the insurance policies there is the so-called “comprehensive coverage” which contemplates these types of damages. If the user has it active, the insurer will pay for the damage.

“If they have comprehensive coverage, they have 100 percent of the flooding minus the deductible and depreciation,” said Félix Cuevas on the morning radio show Cuentas Claras, which is broadcast every day on Nota 95.7 FM.

According to the specialist, only approximately 25 or 30 percent of Dominican citizens have full insurance.

Correa added that within this type of coverage against flooding there is a section that speaks of voluntary and involuntary immersion which the insured must take into account to make the claim.

He explained as an example that voluntary immersion is when you cross a puddle having the option to deviate or go back and involuntary immersion is when you only have that route to move and you do not have the option to go back.

Félix Correa maintained that most insurers exclude voluntary immersion and that involuntary immersion can generally be covered by 50 percent.

Procedure to make the claim according to the expert.

Going to your insurance company or by telephone, the insured will be able to know the parameters to report the damages.

It is advisable to have a technical report and a quote to make a report.

The affected person must go to the Driver’s House, DIGESETT, or the Automobile Center, the user can make the claim, however, given the situation of the floods on Friday, many of the companies are assuming the reports.

This must bring your copy of registration, license, ID. Also, photo of the chassis and the tag.

According to insurance law No. 146-02, insurers have a period of 60 days to make the agreed payment after the claim.
