February 2025 brings with it an impressive astronomical event: the snowmoon. This phenomenon, which receives its name due to the intense snowfalls that usually occur in the northern hemisphere during this month, will be visible without telescopes.

The 2025 snow moon will reach its maximum lighting phase on Wednesday, February 12 at 8:53 am (Colombia time). However, due to daylight at that time, the best opportunity to appreciate it will be in the Around the same day, when the moon is at the top of the sky.

Specifically, its observation is recommended from 1:46 am and again after sunset, at 7:35 pm

Why is it called snow moon?

The name comes from the indigenous peoples of North America, who associate it with the strong snowfall of February.

It is also known with other names such as Luna de Águila Calva, moon of the bear, mapache moon and hungry moon, the latter in reference to the shortage of food during winter.

How to see it in Colombia?

Specialized equipment is not required to observe the snow moon, although a clear sky and away from light pollution will improve the experience. It is recommended to find a high place, without obstructions and with little artificial lighting.
