The regulatory decree of the so-called “Bag Law” states that the minimum price at which plastic bags must be charged will be 0.82 Indexed Units (IU).
This price is set annually according to the value of the UI on the first business day of the year, which in 2023 is equivalent to $4,593. To this value must be added the Value Added Tax (VAT).
In this way, since January the minimum price of plastic bags is $5.6 per unit, that is, almost 50 hundredths more compared to last year.
Today there is no regulation for the maximum price. The recommendation that Cambadu has made on several occasions is that each bag delivered to consumers be charged at $6, but the final decision is up to the merchant.
The regulations in force since 2019 establish that authorized and reusable plastic bags manufactured in the country with recycled material of national origin may not be delivered to end consumers free of charge or for a lower price than the one established, the offender being subject to sanctions.
In addition, the plastic bags delivered must be discriminated in the purchase invoice that is delivered to the customer, indicating the quantity and unit price.
