Recently, President Gustavo Petro spoke of a proposal that caused doubts in the audience. It is about the creation of ‘largest army in Colombia’.

This organization would be made up of 100,000 young people whom he has called ‘Youth in Peace’. The government plans to take them from criminal gangs to serve them. Decision that implies an important use of resources.
“Looking through a change of resources which would take us 1 billion pesos for the coming year. Exchange of resources in exchange for not joining or not being in gangs that are doing what we already know and going to study or finish studying, perhaps we would have a fundamental engine to reduce the homicide rate“said the president.
This is a proposal that was implemented by the Mayor’s Office of Petro, in 2014, in which the administration paid more than 20,000 pesos a month to more than 6,000 young people who belonged to criminal gangs or were going to join them.

The condition was that three days a week be devoted to study and two spent in field practice across the Comprehensive Pedagogical School or the Sena.
Now, the president wants to replicate the program throughout the country. This, by identifying the areas where most homicides are being committed in Colombia and integrating young people there to stop committing crimes.
At that time, every young He received about $700,000. In the end, the process served 9,300 people, many of whom graduated as peace managers.

Under the same purpose as Youth in Peace today, Mayor Claudia López implemented it under the name ‘Parceros Cuidando Bogotá’ and they have joined nearly 5,300 young people from towns such as Suba, Usaquén, Keneddy, Ciudad Bolívar and Usme among others.
