With his victory in this Tuesday’s elections, Donald Trump is the man of the moment in the United States.

His victory in the race for the White House over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has completed a triumphant return to power that has made him a hero to many of his followers.

The spotlight is now on the president-elect and many questions arise about the decisions he will make in his second presidency.

During the campaign, the so-called Project 2025, a initiative by a conservative group to reform the federal government.

Although Trump himself has attempted to distance himself, Democrats and other critics of the president-elect believe that Project 2025 is actually his hidden government plan.

The proposal was created by the Heritage Foundation and has been linked to Trump because several of his former officials contributed to the plan.

The proposal, of more than 900 pages, contemplates the firing of thousands of officials, the expansion of the president’s power, the dismantling of the Department of Education and other federal agencies, as well as radical tax cuts.

Kamala Harris and Democrats tried to mobilize voters against a plan which, according to President Joe Biden, would “destroy America” if carried out.

“I have no idea who is behind it.” [del Proyecto 2025]”Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social. “I don’t agree with some of the things they say and Some of the things they say are absolutely ridiculous.“.

A spokesperson for the initiative said months ago on social media that Project 2025 “does not speak on behalf of any candidate or campaign.”

The Heritage Foundation unveiled the project in April 2023 and has since sparked concern and criticism from sectors that describe themselves as “liberal” in the United States.

In early July, Heritage President Kevin Roberts raised the prospect of political violence during a podcast interview.

“We are in the process of the second American revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it,” Roberts told the podcast War Roomfounded by Trump advisor Steve Bannon.

In response, the Democratic campaign, then still led by Biden, accused Trump and his allies of “dream of a violent revolution to destroy the very idea of America“.

It is common for Washington think tanks to propose political wish lists for possible governments in the making.

What else has Trump said about Project 2025?

In early July, Trump claimed on his social media platform that he knows “nothing about Project 2025.”

“Whatever they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them,” he said.

However, several people linked to the project worked in the Trump administration or as allies in his re-election campaign.

  • Project 2025 director Paul Dans was chief of staff at the Office of Personnel Management under Trump.
  • Associate Director Spencer Chretien was Trump’s special assistant and associate director of Presidential Personnel.
  • Advisor Russell Vought worked in Trump’s Office of Management and Budget.

What is Project 2025?

The Project 2025 document outlines four main objectives: restore the family as the centerpiece of American life; dismantle the administrative State; defend the sovereignty and borders of the nation; and guarantee God-given individual rights to live freely.

It is one of several policy documents in a platform known as Agenda 47, so named because Trump will be the 47th president of the United States.

The Heritage Foundation says that Project 2025 was written by several former Trump appointees and reflects the contributions of more than 100 conservative organizations.

Here is a summary of several key proposals.

The document calls the FBI a “bloated, arrogant and increasingly outside the law organization.”

Government

Project 2025 proposes that the entire federal bureaucracy, including independent agencies like the Department of Justice, be placed under direct presidential control, a controversial idea known as “unitary executive theory”.

In practice, this would speed up decision-making, allowing the president to directly apply his policies in a number of areas.

The proposals also advocate eliminating labor protection for thousands of public employees, who could be replaced by political officials.

The document calls the FBI a “bloated, arrogant, and increasingly lawless organization” and advocates drastic overhauls of it and other federal agencies, including the elimination of the Department of Education.

Immigration

The document proposes increasing funding for a wall on the border between the United States and Mexico, one of Trump’s signature promises in 2016.

However, The highlight is the consolidation of several US immigration agencies and a vast expansion of their powers.

Other proposals include eliminating visa categories for victims of crime and human trafficking, increasing fees for immigrants and allowing fast-track applications for immigrants who pay a premium.

Not all of these details are repeated in the Republican Party platform, but the party wants to implement the “largest deportation program in the history of the United States.”

That idea was one of Donald Trump’s main arguments before voters.

Climate and economy

The document proposes drastically cutting federal money for research and investment in renewable energy and calls for the next president to “stop the war on oil and natural gas”.

Carbon reduction targets would be replaced by efforts to increase energy production and security.

The document lays out two competing views on tariffs and is divided on whether the next president should try to boost free trade or raise barriers to exports.

But economic advisers suggest that a second Trump administration should cut corporate and income taxes, abolish the Federal Reserve and even consider a return to gold-backed currency.

abortion

Project 2025 does not call for a nationwide abortion ban.

However, it proposes removing the abortion pill mifepristone from the market.

The document proposes new data collection efforts on abortion and, more generally, suggests that the Department of Health and Human Services should “maintain a definition of marriage and family that is biblically based and reinforced by social science.”

At least when it comes to abortion, the document differs quite substantially from the Republican platform, which only mentions the word “abortion” once.

The platform says that abortion laws should be left to individual states and that late-term abortions (which they do not define) should be banned, a vision that Trump has largely clung to.

The party platform adds that access to prenatal care, birth control and in vitro fertilization must be protected, and makes no mention of limiting the distribution of mifepristone.

The project proposes eliminating a long list of terms from all federal laws and regulations, including “sexual orientation”, “diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Technology and education

Under Project 2025 proposals, pornography should be banned and technology and telecommunications companies that facilitate access to such content should be shut down.

The document demands the possibility of school choice and parental control over educational centers and points to what it calls “woke propaganda.”

It proposes removing a long list of terms from all federal laws and regulations, including “sexual orientation,” “diversity, equity and inclusion,” “gender equality,” “abortion,” and “reproductive rights.”

Jared Huffman, a Democratic congressman from California, launched the Stop Project 2025 task force.

He described Project 2025 as “a dystopian plot already underway to dismantle our democratic institutions”.

Huffman said the bill would “abolish checks and balances, undermine church-state separation, and impose a far-right agenda that infringes on basic freedoms and violates the public will.”

“We need a coordinated strategy to save America and stop this coup before it is too late”Huffman said before Trump’s election victory.

The Heritage Foundation is one of the most influential think tanks that has produced policy documents designed to guide a possible second Trump presidency.

Since the 1980s, it has produced similar policy papers as part of its Mandate for Leadership series.

Project 2025, supported by a budget of US$22 million, also establishes strategies to implement policies that will begin after the presidential inauguration in January 2025.

In his speeches and on his website, Trump has endorsed a number of ideas included in Project 2025, although his campaign has said he has the final say on policy.

Many of the proposals would face immediate legal challenges if implemented.
