What is known about the armed attack in Tubutama, Sonora

Attack could have been a mix-up of criminals, says Durazo

On Monday, the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, reported that the first hypothesis of the attack is that the aggression was due to confusion between criminal groups.

In an interview with local media, Durazo explained that investigations are ongoing.

“The first hypothesis is that this is not an attack on migrants, but that criminal organisations guard the areas where they move more easily and very possibly mistook this vehicle; investigations are ongoing,” he said.

When asked if this incident could be a result of the capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the governor said that, although it is not believed that this incident is linked to the capture of the drug lord, they must be “attentive to any rearrangement that this incident generates among criminal groups.”

Violence is one of the scourges that most affects migrants crossing Mexico. In February 2024, Mexican authorities in Sonora rescued 251 migrants of different nationalities, including minors.

The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that, following an anonymous complaint for the probable commission of a crime contemplated in the Migration Law and upon carrying out an inspection, migrants were located, who were traveling in containers that were transported in train cars.

According to figures from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office, fiscal year 2023 (which runs from October 2022 to September 2023) recorded the highest number of encounters with migrants: 2 million 475,669.
