What is curare, the silent weapon with which Maduro will confront the US

In the midst of tensions between the United States and Venezuela, the Maduro administration is preparing a defense plan for the country, which includes the incorporation of ancestral knowledge in combat

“They are going to know what curare is,” Diosdado Cabello warned the United States regarding the possibility of an attack by Donald Trump’s administration against Venezuela.

During the PSUV congress, held this Wednesday, November 5, the Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace reviewed some of the strategies that they will use to defend Venezuelan territory and spoke of curare, as one of the silent weapons that they will include in the plan.

Already, on October 12, Nicolás Maduro had asked to include the indigenous people in the fight. During an event held within the framework of the Day of Indigenous Resistance, he ordered the creation of indigenous militia brigades in the country and, at the same time, urged the extension of these defense groups to the indigenous peoples of South America. “We receive letters from indigenous peoples of America who are willing to go to war for Venezuela,” he said.

At that moment, the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Clara Vidal, after giving a headdress and a symbolic spear to Maduro, pointed out that it was “one of the silent weapons that defeated the Spanish empire,” reported France24.

What is known about curare

Amazon poison. Curare is a plant poison that is extracted from several species of plants native to South America, from the Loganiaceae and Menispermaceae families.

Uses of curare. Indigenous communities have used it for centuries, mainly for hunting wild animals. It is applied to the tips of arrows and also to blowguns. Curare also has uses in medicine, particularly in anesthesia and neuromuscular research.

What are the effects. Curare acts as a neuromuscular blocker, causing progressive paralysis and, eventually, death from asphyxiation. An investigation carried out by ABC.es indicates that it was in 1846 when the scientist Claude Bernard concluded that plant poisons block the transmission of electrical impulses from the nerves to the muscles.

“Let’s see how much you can walk with that little bite you have there,” Cabello said when referring to the effects of the plant poison.

ancient practice. The use of curare has been transmitted from generation to generation and, in addition to representing deep botanical knowledge, it allows a connection with nature. The collection and preparation processes are ceremonial and have spiritual and cultural meaning, the organization Corazón de la Amazonía noted on its website.
