What have the presidents of Mexico done in their retirement?

What does Carlos Salinas do abroad?

Since March 11, 1995, months after concluding his six-year term, former President Salinas left the country along with his new partner, Ana Paula Gerard, heading to New York after he reported persecution against his family – due to the arrest of his brother. Raúl – and led a hunger strike that lasted less than three days.

Since then he has visited the country sporadically, but lives abroad, and is located in London, England and with stays in Spain.

A few years ago he acquired Spanish nationality, as he managed it as part of the legal recognition process that the Spanish government opened for descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492.

Since he left the government, in January 1995 he was appointed member of the Board of Directors of the Dow Jones company, but in the midst of the political controversy he was experiencing he had to withdraw his candidacy for director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO). that he aspired to lead. In 1996 he ceased his duties at that international firm.

During that time Salinas rejected other accusations such as having participated in money laundering or having provided protection to drug traffickers, while he accused his predecessor, Ernesto Zedillo, of leading a campaign against him.

He has practically lived in exile: in 1995 it was identified that he lived in New York and Boston, United States; Montreal, Canada, Cuba, and the Bahamas, and since 1996 in Ireland, Dublin, a country with which Mexico does not have an extradition treaty.

He has written some books, such as Memories Mexico, a difficult step towards modernityedited by Plaza & Janés.

On June 25, Salinas de Gortari reappeared at a private event in Spain, and was seen together with businessmen and Quirino Ordaz, ambassador to Spain and former PRI member.

What happened to Vicente Fox?

Former President Vicente Fox, who governed from 2000 to 2006, returned to his business activities.

He had to intensify them in this six-year term, because in 2018, upon the arrival of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he canceled the life pension for former presidents of the Republic, which was recriminated by the man from Guanajuato.

His ranch in Guanajuato, headquarters of the Fox Center, was dedicated to academic activities, but he diversified it and turned it into an area for concerts, exhibitions, forums, graduations, with capacity for up to 10,000 people and another part into the Hacienda San Cristóbal Hotel, with cabins , spa and even a presidential museum.

In 2020, he partnered with businessmen from Nuevo León to promote the company Paradise, dedicated to marketing products derived from marijuana. That year the objective was to operate 400 stores in the main tourist centers of the country.

In 2021, he expanded his alliance as the actor Roberto Palazuelos partnered with him by acquiring share capital of the company.

However, in July of last year the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) announced the closure of the Paradise store and the seizure of thousands of cannabis products.

The former president has ventured into television, where he broadcast a weekly program on TV Azteca, with interviews with various leaders in his program “La Era de las Definiciones.”

What does Zedillo do?

When Ernesto Zedillo left the presidency of the country, in December 2000, he got a job.

However, having worked for the firm Union Pacific, the same company to which the National Railways of Mexico were concessioned, privatized during his mandate, generated criticism and animosity.

For 24 years he had practically remained silent, retired from Mexican public and political life. He was a member of the Council of United States companies such as Procter and Gamble and Alcoa.

He was also director of the Center for the Study of Globalization at Yale University. Professor of International Economics and Politics, Professor of International and Area Studies and Adjunct Professor of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale University and participated in United Nations programs, with topics such as financing developing countries.

However, in January 2024 he participated in a panel organized by Actinver Bank, at the Hacienda de Los Morales in Mexico City, where he questioned “populist” politicians and leaders who claim to promote democracy, but erode it. . and raised the challenge of “protecting democracy” against regressions seen in other nations, which generated controversy with López Obrador.

On September 17, he reactivated the controversy again, expressing his rejection of the judicial reform promoted by López Obrador and which he saw as “an atrocity that will bury Mexican democracy and what remains of its fragile rule of law will transform it into a tyranny.”
