The resident coordinator of the United Nations in the Dominican Republic, Mauricio Ramírez Villegas, reported today that energy produced with fossil fuels represents 60% of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, for which there is an urgent need to mitigate this reality with the production of renewable energy.

Villegas issued this statement during his presentation at the Regional Training Course on Modeling the Study of Regional Energy Supply through the Message Model of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with the participation of 14 countries from Latin America and the Caribbean, members of the IAEA, organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mines of the Dominican Republic. Minister Antonio Almonte was present at the activity.

“The energy transition it must become a real and effective transformation effort based on the rapid expansion and use of all available technologies to innovate for the future to promote the sustainable development of the planet”, he emphasized.

He assured that in this region 53% of the total energy consumption comes from oil and its derivatives and only 10% of the energy comes from renewable sources, arguing that it is essential to advance in the planning of actions to comply with the Paris Agreement on climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energy.

“During this critical stage in which carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced by 45 percent to reach net zero by 2050, it is essential to move forward with the planning of actions that allow the sustainability of the environment with the generation of clean energy. “, said.

He stated that the renewable energy they offer new growth opportunities, allow companies to grow, create jobs and new markets, and also contribute to the sustainable development of the planet.

IAEA member states such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Uruguay, Panama, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic participate in the activity.

The course is aimed at professionals who are part of the national teams within the RLA 2017 cooperation project and who are involved in the preparation of energy supply analysis studies using the Message tool.
