What did the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners say about the amnesty law proposed by Chavismo?

The Venezuelan NGO Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners told EFE this Saturday that it remains cautious about the announcement by the president in charge of the South American country, Delcy Rodríguez, of an amnesty law – who must appear in the “next few hours” before Parliament – to free the political prisoners.

“We handle it very cautiously, because what we have seen so far is that There has been no correspondence between what is said and what is done“said Diego Casanova, member of the NGO. This during an activity to collect supplies for relatives of political prisoners at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).

Casanova indicated that the release process announced by the authorities on January 8 “has not materialized.” Mainly because, he assured, the measures have not been granted quickly.

“So the process has been re-victimizing, it has implied that families have high levels of anxiety, they are exposed to uncertainty, to fear,” he noted.

Furthermore, he reported cases of intimidation by police officers against relatives of political prisoners who remain outside the detention centers.

The activist believes that the proposed law could be an opportunity to recognize “all the damage that has been done.” As well as the mistreatment that the authorities, he said, have committed against the victims.

This Friday, Rodríguez proposed an amnesty law to release political prisoners who have been detained from 1999 to the present. A period that covers the Chavismo governments.

The Chavista leader commissioned the Judicial Revolution Commission and the Program for Coexistence and Peace to ensure that in the “next few hours” present the law before the National Assembly. As well as the “maximum collaboration” with the legislative body for its approval.

“Let it be a law that serves to repair the wounds left by the political confrontation. From violence, from extremism. May it serve to redirect justice in our country and serve to redirect coexistence among Venezuelans,” added the president who was sworn in after the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States.
