What did Mujica say about the reduction of the working day?

The ex-president Jose Mujica participated in Act that took place this May 1 for Workers’ Day. “It seems to me a very good thing that government leaders were in the act even in disagreement; that is good that it is sustained because it speaks of our political coexistence,” said Mujica.

The former president also spoke about the market economy, the spillover system and the reduction of the working day in Uruguay. “There are contradictions that are as old as the mate hole: the market economy has its own contradictions and will always have them. The one who accumulates wealth wants more, wants more and more, and it is logical, ”he began.

“This is how human beings work. And the one who works for a salary needs more. If the struggle of the workers for the distribution of the economy itself was not there, in the end, it would be blocked because it is the natural egoism that we carry within. Those who are above do not distribute. Here the role of the State plays, forcing distribution ”, she developed.

Spill system “doesn’t work anywhere; I’m not saying it, even the president of the United States says it,” said the former president.

On the reduction of the working day, one of the proposals mentioned in the act, Mujica asserted: “It is sung that it will come, I don’t know when. Domingo Arena already announced it in 1914”.

“It will come from the most lucid, even from the employer sectors themselves. Because it is necessary to distribute, because the robots do not go to the supermarket to buy ”, he added.

“Do you know where the contradictions are? The consumer society is so big that they give us 6 hours of work and we get two jobs and work more than before. We ourselves stepped on our feet, that’s why we have to fight”, the leader of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP) developed about the new employment paradigm.

Asked if this government was working to accentuate inequalities, in terms of the president of the PIT-CNT Marcelo Abdala, Mujica assured: “Of course, because there is a theoretical conviction” about “prosperity” that is generated from those to whom doing well in the economy. “And that is not fulfilled if the State does not click,” he said.

“I believe, like Don José Batlle y Ordóñez, that the State should be the shield of the poor,” concluded Mujica.
