Santo Domingo.– In an extraordinary session, the Senate of the Republic unanimously approved this Friday the modifications to the draft Organic Law of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPP), sent by the Chamber of Deputies.
With this decision, the Congress advances in one of the most relevant legal reforms in recent years, aimed at strengthening constitutional guarantees and modernizing the administration of justice.
The initiative, promoted by the senators Cristóbal Venerado Castillo, Félix Bautista, Antonio Taveras Guzmán and Omar Fernándezintroduces adjustments that reinforce due process, expand the protection of human dignity and update procedures to make the more agile penal systemtransparent and efficient.
The president of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santoshighlighted that the approval strengthens the institutional commitment to protection of fundamental rights.
He invited citizens to issue objective criticism about the reform and valued the technical work of the special commission that analyzed the project.
Main modifications
The reform incorporates 60 articles that redefine procedural deadlinescoercive measures, rules on roots and powers of the executing judge. It also consolidates the principle of the natural judge and harmonizes concepts with the new Penal Code.
The text prioritizes minimal criminal interventionthe immediate application of procedural rules and speed through agreements from any stage of the process.
The study of project required 118 hours of work, distributed in 14 meetings of the special commission, 18 of the subcommittee and four technical review days.
Other decisions
During the session, the Senate too welcomed the observation of Executive Power to the Law that modifies Law 225-20 on comprehensive management of solid waste, which now It passes again to the Chamber of Deputies.
The Plenary concluded with a minute of silence in memory of Felipe Corporán, Mario Ureña, Víctor Suárez Henríquez and Olegario Lantigua.
