Henrique Capriles considered this Wednesday as a “mockery of the victims” that has been named as ombudsman (albeit temporarily) to Tarek William Saabwho until today served as Attorney General of Venezuela.
Speaking to the press after a session in Parliament, Capriles pointed out Saab as “the person responsible for the persecution and prosecution” in the country and criticized that he is now in charge of the Ombudsman’s Office.
Capriles added that this represents a mockery of the victims and the Venezuelans who expect public powers to “serve the interests of the people and not the Government.”
Earlier, the National Assembly (AN) announced that Saab submitted his resignation as Attorney General and? Alfredo Ruiz resigned as Ombudsman for personal, family and health reasons.
After this, Parliament Sworn in Larry Devoe as Acting Attorney General already Saab as Ombudsman in chargewhile the process of selecting the officials who will permanently occupy these positions begins.
Capriles also assured that “Everyone knows that the prosecutor in charge is a person close to the ruling party” and claimed that the country needs an independent prosecutor and ombudsman.
Both Saab and Ruiz had been ratified in October 2024 for a period of seven years (until 2031)but their resignations were announced this Wednesday.
Saab, who was also a governor supported by Chavismo, had arrived at the Prosecutor’s Office in 2017 by appointment of the National Constituent Assembly.
The resignations occur in the middle of a process of amnesty approved by Parliamentwhich will allow releases of political prisonersalthough the rule only contemplates certain cases.
The president in charge Delcy Rodriguez He requested that the monitoring commission review “expeditiously” those cases that are not contemplated in the legislation.
