Computer fraud and identity theft are the most common computer crimes in Peru. Until April of this year, more than 7,000 complaints were reported in the Public ministry. Of this total, 5,356 are typified computer crimes.
In this context, in many cases passwords are the only barrier between a cybercriminal and a person’s private information, so it is important that the user generate keys that are not easy to crack.
The best passwords are long, unique and difficult to guess, explains Patricia Rojas, head of Channels and Services at Caja Piura. However, for many people, remembering a strong password that includes uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols is very difficult.
What are the passwords that we should not use?
Most Peruvians mistakenly choose these six passwords making their accounts vulnerable:
- 123456
- 123456789
- 12345
- password
- password
- 111111
Every month about 300 reports of computer crimes are registered on average in the High Technology Division (Divindat), many of them originate from human error, “says Rojas.
How to create the best password to protect my data?
For this reason, the specialist offers you this mnemonic method that will help you easily create and memorize a strong password that is difficult for a cybercriminal to crack.
- Choose a phrase: For example, “Mother’s Day”
- Include a product or service: “DíadelamadreCorreo”
- Add numbers: “Mother’s DayMail2022″
- Add a symbol: “Soyunperuano2022!”
- Select the phrase initials, number, and symbol for: “Dia dand hea Mfather Correo 2022!”, i.e. DdlMC2022!
In addition, the executive recommends changing the password at least every three months. “Remember to never share your passwords with anyone or use the same key for all your accounts. Avoid using data such as names, important dates, addresses or your ID number because it is easy information for a cybercriminal to find out”, maintains the spokeswoman.
