The Ministry of Agriculture, through the Office of Agrarian Studies and Policies (Odepa), has revealed the food seasonal products that have experienced a notable decrease in prices during the last week in various regions of Chile. This study provides valuable information about the most accessible products in different locations in the country, allowing consumers to make informed decisions when making their purchases.
In the Arica and Parinacota Region, foods such as kiwi, apple, onion, potato, pepper and whole trutro chicken stand out, which have registered significant reductions in their prices at free fairs and local butcher shops. This trend is also observed in other regions such as Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana and Maule, where products such as apples, lemons, pears, potatoes, peppers, among others, have experienced decreases in their costs.
These lower prices especially benefit people belonging to the most vulnerable 40%, according to the Social Household Registry, who can access cheaper and more varied food thanks to these fluctuations in the market. Furthermore, this study allows us to identify the communities where the food are more affordable, providing an opportunity to improve access to healthy eating across the country.
Between the food That have experienced decreases in prices are fruits such as kiwi, apple, pear and lemon, as well as vegetables such as onion, potato, pepper, broccoli, cauliflower and spinach. These products, essential in the daily diet, become even more attractive to consumers due to their lower cost, which promotes a balanced and varied diet in all Chilean homes.
The availability of this information through Odepa is an important step to promote transparency in the prices of food and guarantee equitable access to quality food throughout the national territory. In addition, this initiative contributes to promoting local agriculture and the consumption of seasonal products, thus strengthening the regional economy and the well-being of farmers and consumers alike.
