The American company Western Union resumed remittance services to Cuba through “a pilot program” with the hope of expanding its operations in the future, according to a report today from the New Herald.
“It is with great pleasure that we announce the resumption of our operations in Cuba with an initial trial phase of outbound service from the United States to customers with Cuban bank accounts through select US agent locations,” said Gabriella Fitzgerald, division president. of North America from Western Union, quoted by the Herald.
Rumors about the reestablishment of services to Cuba through the US company grew this week, to the point that many claim to have made transfers without them even reaching the island.
Before the company suspended its operations in November 2020, experts estimated that remittances were the second largest source of income in the country, the Florida outlet points out.
In November 2020, the 407 payment points that Western Union had on the Island closed due to sanctions from the United States government.
The US company operated on the island in conjunction with the financial company Cimex SA (Fincimex).
