The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, referred to Michelle Bachelet’s announcement that she will return to Chile, after not seeking another term at the United Nations Organization (UN), as High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The former president confirmed that she will not stand for a second term in office, the one she assumed in 2018.
“This historic session will be the last in which I will appear,” said the former president at the end of a speech in which she reviewed the situation of fundamental rights and freedoms in the world before the UN Human Rights Council.
This declaration establishes that Bachelet will not be part of the main United Nations Human Rights body in the next session of the Council, which will be held between September 12 and October 7 of this year.
After the news, President Boric spoke through his social networks. “Welcome back!” he argued.
On the other hand, the new president of the Socialist Party, Paulina Vodanovic, addressed the importance of Bachelet’s presence prior to the exit plebiscite.
“It is legitimate for her to return and from the political point of view it is important. President Bachelet is a great reference. It will be important that she be present in the Approval campaign,” he said on Channel 13.
It should be remembered that Bachelet’s announcement comes days after her trip to China, where she was harshly criticized by the executive director of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth, who called the visit “disastrous.”
