“We want the acts of violence to be left behind”: they announce a plan to return to classes and demonstrations in Santiago

A few hours before the beginning of March, Carabineros and the Municipality of Santiago are preparing for the start of classes and with it the return to high school demonstrations.

With 2022 marked by protests around the National Institute, Barros Arana National Boarding School (INBA), Application High School and Barros Borgoño High School; Carabineros announced that they are working on the “March Plan.”

This contemplates the deployment of police personnel in these conflictive areas, which include the Alameda axis, between Plaza Baquedano and Echaurren.

General Enrique Monrás, national director of Order and Security of the Carabineros, explained that they already have two demonstrations planned: March 8 for Women’s Day and March 9, the day when high school protests are expected.

“There are calls, we are always trying to find out what is happening, especially on social networks. The next thing is March 8, where we are already working on planning this service for this demonstration that we have historically had and in some cases they have ended with disorders. Later there is a call for 9 that is also being prepared,” he said.

In this regard, the mayoress of Santiago, Irací Hassler, explained that improvements were made to the infrastructure of these high schools during the vacation weeks, so they hope that the demonstrations that seek improvements will be carried out “prioritizing those requests and not with acts of violence. That is what we want to leave behind,” he concluded.
