Alberto Reyes Pías, 2023

“We started 2023 with the same empty and ridiculous speeches”

MIAMI, United States. – Father Alberto Reyes Pías, a Catholic priest from Camagüey, lamented this Wednesday the panorama of Cuba at the beginning of 2023 and criticized the Government of the Island for its management and “its empty and ridiculous speeches.”

“We started 2023 with the same empty and ridiculous speeches to which we are already accustomed: make an effort, fight, be creative, do more with less… In short, multiple versions of ‘resist and win’, which is nothing more than an underhanded and cynical to say that there will be no opening to the free creation of wealth”, wrote the catholic priest on his Facebook wall.

“‘Resist and win’ does not mean anything other than ‘you will have to survive however you can’, until the end of this year and the same thing is repeated to you in another way,” he added.

Reyes Pías also said that, “apparently”, 2023 had begun “without what we call ‘political will’ for a change to be made in Cuba that allows a real improvement in people’s lives.”

“We started 2023 with the prisons full of political prisoners, for whom there does not seem to be an intention of amnesty,” he said.

“We started 2023 with a high degree of robbery and violence, which is not justified, but before which we must understand that when the normal paths that allow us to obtain money and the means necessary for life are closed or extremely difficult, the worst of the human being awakens and the limits that keep us human are quickly blurred, ”he lamented.

For the priest, a habitual critic of the management of the island’s regime, Cubans began this new year “with the basics turned into a problem: food, medicine, transportation… with galloping and apparently unstoppable inflation, with the days turned into an exhausting obstacle course to achieve what is purely necessary for life”.

“We started 2023 with a people on the run, who increasingly conceive emigration as the only way to solve their problemsa flight that leaves behind separations, loneliness, sadness and a country with fewer and fewer young people”.

“Given all this panorama, we have the impression of a government that either does not seem to be aware of the situation of this people, or has decided to ignore this situation, offering only battle slogans, paradisiacal images of a happy and prosperous country that only exists on television, and repressive laws that warn very clearly that discordant voices or attitudes will not be tolerated“, critical.
