“We have been living in shit for months”: Neighbors of Marianao under the sewage waters

“No one pays attention to us,” denounce several people interviewed by ‘CubaNet’.

HAVANA, Cuba. – “No one has taken care of the State to see how we solve the problem,” denounce neighbors residing in a building in the Havana municipality of Marianao whose apartments have been flooded with sewage water for just over two months.

According to Yarien Lázaro Cabrera Fernández, a resident of 86th Street, number 4510, between 45 and 47, in the Santa Felicia neighborhood, the unsanitary situation they suffer dates back to November 2, when water entered the four apartments located on the ground floor of the building.

“There is no one who can do anything to solve this problem. Before the waters [albañales] They were leaving, but since November they have stayed in the houses permanently and we no longer know what to do or who to see. We have been living in shit for months and no one pays attention to us,” denounced the 34-year-old.

According to Cabrera Fernández, before November 2, flooding occurred when it rained and caused blockages in the drains, although, as he specified, after the rains the water disappeared. However, currently the situation has changed because now the sewage water rises through the drains even if it does not rain.

“Since November of last year the water came out one day and it has never gone away. Unfortunately I have nowhere to be and I have to stay here,” he lamented.

The interviewee told to CubaNet that last December he contracted bacterial hepatitis, an illness that he attributed to having to live in sewer water all the time.

“The other thing is that there are a lot of mosquitoes, you can’t be here when the power goes out. There are millions of mosquitoes biting you and you have to cover yourself from head to toe because they eat you,” he added.

Likewise, he assured that the situation is known to all authorities. “The people of the Government know it [de Marianao]Party, Housing [Dirección Municipal de Vivienda de Marianao] and the people of Aguas de La Habana,” he said.

Cabrera Fernández pointed out that he even wrote to the Population Assistance section of the website of the Presidency and the Government of Cuba, after which he received the following response, more than a month ago: “We inform you that it has been decided to report the matter to the OSDE Water and Sanitation for its attention and response.”

Meanwhile, Fidel Hernández Díaz, another of those affected, stated that he has lost most of his household appliances and requested the immediate presence of the authorities on the scene to find a solution to the problem.

“I lost the refrigerator, the television and even the mattresses; and no one has cared, no one has come,” he denounced.

The man explained that there are four apartments affected and highlighted that the residents of the other two homes went to other relatives’ houses.

Hernández Díaz also showed the conditions of the bathroom in his house, whose toilet is overflowing with feces. Even to bathe he has to stand on two boards that are on top of concrete blocks.
