MEP Javier López, head of the Electoral Observation Mission of the European Union, assured that he trusts the transparency of the presidential elections that will be held this Sunday May 29 in the country.
In dialogue with RCN World, Lopez pointed out thathe most important value of the mission is the neutrality of its positions, in addition to his clear and transparent observations regarding the voting.
“We trust that this weekend the country will have a quiet, peaceful election day, where citizens decide their future and at the same time there will be a transparent and traceable process for information, because it is the best way to generate confidence among voters and actors. politicians,” he said.
He also pointed out that despite the fact that the European delegation is diverse, they have clear and rigorous rules on the elections in a country like Colombia.
“We have a delegation from the European Parliament of seven MEPs, plural, but with very clear rules around neutrality in the process. None of the MEPs who participated in the electoral process during the Observation Mission can issue political assessments.”
He added that “we are very scrupulous because we understand that our added value is based on our observations and that trust on the part of the voters and that is only achieved if our opinion is respected from the point of view of neutrality. The vast majority of participants of our electoral observation mission are not politicians, they are technicians and have worked in dozens of observation missions in various parts of the world”.
