Wave of criticism for the allocation of "quotas" in the UNAN-Managua

Dozens of users on social networks have turned to criticizing the results of the psychometric test of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua). Some say that the places in the different careers of that house of studies were assigned by “connect” to high school graduates who are members of the Sandinista Youth (JS) or the government party.

Other users point out that their acquaintances or relatives obtained high marks of more than 90 points in the exam, but that it was not enough for them to classify in the first or second option. Some, with grades to enter their preferred career, were placed in the third option, they denounce. In addition, they questioned the method for classifying new university students.

According to the authorities of the UNAN-Managua 27,799 high school graduates from all over the country showed up to take the psychometric test, but the university only had space for 13,775 young people. Of this total of new admissions, 60% are women and 40% men, reported the house of studies.

“They are big corrupt. My son got 93 (points) on the test and did not qualify. They should say that enrollment is only for public school students and that they don’t know anything, go with “lever”», wrote a Facebook user in a propaganda media publication about the results of the psychometric test.

«Now everything is mediocre, that’s how the professionals will be: friends of deputies, mayors, politicians, teachers and rectors. The more suitcases class. In 2021 my son with 99% did not even qualify in nursing due to lack of political connection, “added another user on the social network.

Another person called the selection process a “fiasco.” “There are anomalies. My cousin got a good average, but he did not qualify in any (race), the exam was 97 points, “commented a netizen.

Regarding the allocation of places to sympathizers of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), one user commented that “obviously the places are “reserved” (in) the medical course.”

“If you are not affiliated with the FSLN, it will be almost impossible for you to qualify. In my case, I got a 96 rating and left nothing. How is it weird isn’t it? It has already happened to me twice, ”questioned another user on Facebook.

Elimination of the admission test

Since 2021, the National Council of Universities (CNU) agreed that high-demand careers will carry out psychometric tests. This provision has been put into practice in four public universities, including UNA-Managua, where the courses in greatest demand are medicine, public accounting and English.

In October 2020, the National Council of Universities (CNU) decided to eliminate the 2021 admission exam to public universities in the country. At that time, it was argued that the decision was “to give the poor an opportunity,” said Ramona Rodríguez, president of the governing body for higher education in Nicaragua.

Former Education Minister Humberto Belli said at the time that the Ortega regime’s measure is “populist and absurd, and will result in a waste of the taxes of all Nicaraguans on students who could drop out.”
