Waterfront that would pass through San Juan del Sur, forgotten and full of holes

Waterfront that would pass through San Juan del Sur, forgotten and full of holes

The terrible state of the street that connects the tourist city of San Juan del Sur with the municipality of Rivas, through the route known as La Chocolata, is a problem for the tourism sector and residents of various rural communities settled in that area of San Juan del Sur and Rivas. Visitors do not arrive because their vehicles break down on the way.

On this important route, several rural communities and many tourist centers are located that offer their services to visitors from several beaches located north of San Juan del Sur, such as Madera, Marsella and Majagual.

The poor state of the street is a delay for tourists, because a route that can be covered in 20 minutes takes more than an hour to get there, explained one of the owners of tourist businesses in the sector, who asked us to omit his name to avoid local reprisals.

“This street (San Juan del Sur, by La Chocolata), they said they were going to pave it because it is part of the dreamed coastal highway, but it seems they forgot about the project,” said a resident of the community of Las Marías.

There is investment, but…

Another business owner from that area of San Juan stated that before the government announcement that the coastal highway would soon be built, many foreigners and nationals are investing in the area, building hotels, bars, restaurants, and various types of tourist businesses, but she regretted, ” that they do not rush to give an answer to the problem of the bad way».

“That deteriorated even more with the last winter,” explained the citizen.

The Pacific Coastal Highway project has been contemplated since the time of the liberal governments, but it was not until 2021 that the Daniel Ortega regime announced that construction work would begin from Ochomogo to Las Salinas, in the municipality of Hello, Rivas. But nothing has happened.

The Costanera route through Rivense territory includes the 15-kilometer section between San Juan del Sur and Rivas via La Chocolate, and the road section between Rivas and El Astillero, Tola, and 40 kilometers between the Salinas de Tola and Ochomogo via Escalante .
