Water crisis in Bogotá: exploration of groundwater in the Sabana advances

With the aim of facing the growing water shortage that affects Bogotá during drought seasons, the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) and the Government of Cundinamarca They began studies to identify groundwater deposits in ten municipalities of the Sabana.

This project seeks to guarantee the supply of drinking water to the capital and neighboring communities, considering that current reservoirs are unable to cover demand in critical times.

The technical studies will cover the municipalities of Sopó, Cajicá, Gachancipá, Chía, Cota, Funza, Mosquera, Madrid, Facatativá and La Calera. The analysis will focus on exploring the underground water potential, determining the depth of the aquifers and defining the strategic points to build deep wells that reinforce the supply system.

“The agreement marks a fundamental step to address the water crisis. “It is time to move towards real solutions, such as the construction of an alternative drinking water system in this area of ​​the territory.”stated Alfred Ignacio Ballesteros, general director of the CAR.

The information obtained from these studies will not only allow the planning and drilling of wells, but will also offer essential data for the management of water concessions and territorial planning. These actions will benefit productive sectors and local communities, strengthening their capacity to adapt to water challenges.

The governor of Cundinamarca, Jorge Emilio Rey, highlighted that the initiative also contemplates the structuring of a regional aqueduct that guarantees a stable and sustainable supply in the long term. “With these studies, we will take a step towards the water security that the municipalities of Sabana and Bogotá need,” he added.

This project joins other inter-institutional efforts between the CAR and the Government of Cundinamarca, such as the development of a technology park for waste management, the improvement of surface water quality through specialized analysis and the design of basic sanitation works.

Finally, the entity indicated that The project will have an investment that exceeds 13 billion pesos. The authorities seek not only to guarantee access to water, but also to optimize the quality of life of the region’s inhabitants and protect its natural resources in the face of growing demand.
