Wastewater threatens the Santa Julia wetland in Piura

The Santa Julia Wetland, a natural space of vital importance in the It is under scrutiny by the authorities due to a complaint about wastewater contamination.

As reported by Segundo Abramonte Crisanto, Environmental Management Manager of the district commune, to Norte Sostenible, a lawsuit has been filed with the Prosecutor’s Office against the Provincial Municipality of Piura, pointing out that it is responsible for the administration of the Los Robles well, whose collapse would be dumping contaminated water into the Turkey-Japan drain and, consequently, into the wetland.

POLLUTION.According to the technical report presented by the Municipality of Veintiséis de Octubre, the Los Robles well has collapsed, causing wastewater to be discharged directly into the wetland.

This situation, which has been monitored by the district municipality, is now in the hands of the Prosecutor’s Office, which has accepted the complaint.

Wastewater pollution represents a serious threat to the biodiversity of the Santa Julia Wetland, an ecosystem that is home to approximately 95 species of birds distributed in 35 families, as well as wild flora such as cattails and reeds. This incident puts at risk the conservation efforts that the Municipality of Veintisirse de Octubre has been developing since the beginning of the 2023 administration.

CONSERVATION. Despite the threat of contamination, the Municipality of Veintisirse de Octubre has implemented various actions for the recovery and conservation of the wetland.

At the beginning of the administration, the space was a “dump of garbage and debris,” with the presence of “people with bad lives.” However, a general cleaning was carried out that transformed the place, eliminating solid waste and debris.

Currently, the wetland has a fence and an entrance gate made of recyclable materials, the product of a recycling program. In addition, security has been reinforced with the presence of security guards and a permanent security guard. However, the lack of signage and security at the accesses represents a serious danger, since you have to cross the Sánchez Arteaga and Santa Julia human settlements to get there.

The municipality has also promoted the creation of a technical working group through the Municipal Environmental Commission (CAM), with the objective of converting the wetland into an Environmental Conservation Area (ACA).

In this framework, visits by students from educational centers and universities for bird watching are promoted, using specialized equipment acquired through educational programs.

A significant advance in the conservation of the wetland is the legal physical sanitation of an area of approximately 16 hectares.
