Washington prosecutor will investigate migrant transfers

The governor of Arizona sent at least 2,170 migrants to Washington in 60 buses, and last month the governor of Florida transferred 49 people, mostly Venezuelans, from San Antonio (Texas) to Massachusetts

Washington prosecutor Karl Racine launched an investigation into the transfer of migrants from southern and border states to the US capital, calling them “political acrobatics” by Republican governors.

Racine examines whether hundreds of migrants were deceived by those who organized the transfers from Texas to Washington, according to what was published this Friday the 14th by the newspaper The Texas Tribune and the journalistic investigation platform ProPublica.

In recent months, Republican Governors Ron DeSantis (Florida), Greg Abbott (Texas) and Doug Ducey (Arizona) have dispatched dozens of migrants from their states to others with Democratic governments in the north of the country.

Prosecutor Racine said the migrants “have spoken persuasively that they were duped and promised services.”

Greg Abbott began the transfer of migrants last April, the majority of whom are people who have applied for asylum in the United States and await the immigration process. At least 12,000 have been transported from that state.

The governor of Arizona sent at least 2,170 migrants to Washington on 60 buses, and last month DeSantis moved 49 people, mostly Venezuelans, from San Antonio, Texas, to Massachusetts. For this last fact, a coalition of lawyers filed a lawsuit against DeSantis for taking these people “under deceit” to the island of Martha’s Vineyard.

This transfer has also generated several investigations by the US Treasury Department and local authorities in Texas.

The Sheriff of Bexas County (Texas), Javier Salazar, certified this Thursday as “victims of a crime” the migrants taken to Massachusetts. That will allow them to process a path for them to obtain space visas for victims or witnesses of crimes.
