Miami.- The United States Western Hemisphere Affairs Office condemned the death of LTo Cuban Political Dam Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez in a Cuban detention center, through Your X account.
“The death of Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez in a Cuban field of work is a murder at the hands of its captors. Another proof that the Cuban regime is the enemy of their own people: they have left two mother -in -law children, ”the statement adds that Oviedo was imprisoned for exercising their rights. “Those who perpetuate violations of freedom should not expect to be unpunished.”

The political dam Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez died this February 11 in the Women’s prison (Havana), known as El Guatao where he served a five -year sentence. Oviedo was arrested on October 10, 2022 for demonstrating against the blackouts in Güines, Mayabeque.
“His son went to look for her quickly and someone from the prison told him that they would deliver it to seven at night,” activist Alejandro Garlobo wrote on his Facebook wall. The opponent stressed that Yoleisy had been sick for months without receiving proper treatment.
Almost 24 hours after his death, they allowed his body to be transferred to the funeral home of Calzada and K, in Havana, under strong surveillance. Oviedo Rodíguez, mother of two children, was 42 years old.
This month the deaths of three other inmates in Cuban prisons have been known, two of them died from malnutrition.
“The Cuban State is responsible for the life and integrity of people under their custody. These deaths reflect the systematic negligence of the regime and extreme precariousness within the penitentiary system, ”Cubalex said by denouncing these deaths in prison.
On January 30, Yankiel Justiz Despaigne, An inmate 36 years old, he died due to tuberculosis in the southern hair prison, located in the province of Mayabeque. According to iNformation provided by CubalexJustiz Despaigne died in his cell without receiving timely medical attention, evidencing a worrying negligence in the Cuban prison system.
These complaints are not isolated cases. Between January 2022 and January 2024, Cubalex documented 56 deaths in state custody in Cuba, of which 34 corresponded to inmates. These deaths are attributable to systematic practices of negligence and medical neglect in the country’s prisons.
Inhuman detention conditions further aggravate the health of people deprived of liberty. Factors such as overcrowding, unhealthiness, malnutrition and scarcity of drinking water facilitate the spread of diseases and deteriorate the health of inmates. The lack of hygiene, adequate ventilation and sufficient food are recurring problems in Cuban prisons.
