The head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced on Thursday, January 12, the deployment of more than 6,000 elements of the National Guard in stations and “other facilities” of the Metro of the capital, after a series of incidents that rated as out of the ordinary.
Sheinbaum said that he asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the support of the National Guard, a militarized police force, after several “atypical” episodes.
A few days earlier, a train crash in the capital’s Metro caused the death of a woman and injured 57 other people.
This week, capital and federal authorities assured that due to the almost 6,000 elements of the National Guard deployed in the stations and strategic facilities of the Metro Collective Transportation System, crimes decreased, as well as incidents that have affected the service to users.
