MADRID, Spain.- Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the seismological service in Cuba, warned about the possibility of a strong earthquake on the island.
“There is significant accumulated energy that can cause a strong earthquake,” Arango Arias said in an interview with Technical Youth.
According to his considerations, this accumulation and danger are due to a drop in seismic activity.
During the first semester of the current year, a total of 1,470 earthquakes were recorded on the Island; 437 less than in the same period of 2021.
“Despite the high seismicity recorded in the Tiburón peninsula, southwest of Haiti, no perceptible earthquake has occurred with an epicenter in the Oriente fault, south of Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo, so far this year,” said the specialist.
“The anomalous seismic activity recorded in the vicinity of the town of San Cristóbal, province of Artemisa, on June 29, 2021, which generated 261 aftershocks between that date and July 3, accentuated the difference between the data from last year and those (registered) in 2022,” he added.
According to the six-monthly summary published by the National Center for Seismological Research, for the first half of 2022, the area with the greatest number of registered earthquakes was the Santiago-Baconao region, with 705, and the day on which the most earthquake events occurred this type was on March 14, with 22 registered.
About 70% of the telluric events reported in Cuba are concentrated in the Oriente fault, located along the southeast coast of the country. The eastern region is the most prone to this type of phenomenon due to its location on the border of the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates.
