In the Annual Report on Religious Freedom in the World 2020published in May 2021, the US State Department warned that the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), through the Office of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, sought to “continually control the majority of aspects of religious life.

“Special Watch List”

Last year, the US government itself included the Cuban regime in the “Special Watch List” of governments that violate religious freedom. Nicaragua, Algeria and Comoros also appeared in the list.

According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the initiative aims to identify governments and non-state actors that, due to their violations of religious freedom, deserve to be designated under the International Religious Freedom Act.

Washington placed special emphasis on countries such as Burma, the People’s Republic of China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, whose governments participate in and tolerate “systematic, continuous and egregious violations of freedom”.

In that regard, the US also drew attention to terrorist organizations such as al-Shabab, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Greater Sahara, ISIS-West Africa, Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal -Muslim and the Taliban.
