New revelations in the ‘El Cofre’ case shake the Peruvian political sphere. According to a recent investigation, there would be a high-level protection network that would have allowed Vladimir Cerronfugitive leader of Peru Libre, evaded capture and remained underground.
According to exclusive audio from Fourth EstateJuan José Santiváñez, Minister of the Interior, would have confessed to PNP Captain Junior Izquierdo, known as “Culebra”, that “there are two generals who are protecting Cerrón.”
In addition, Sergio Monar is mentioned, a retired general who held the position of director of the General Directorate of Intelligence (DIGIMIN) and who was reportedly summoned to organize search teams for the leader of Peru Libre. Despite his efforts, Cerrón managed to evade at least nine operations.
The former commander of the PNP, Jorge Ángulo, questioned the transparency of these operations, pointing out that “information was leaked” from within the search team, and even mentioned a “security ring” supposedly composed of Cuban agents, with whom Cerrón I would have established contacts.
Lawyer José Carlos Mejía, defender of Captain Izquierdo, was blunt about the implications of this case. “Here, there are definitely many committed officials in the central government. Not only in the Government Palace, also in the Ministry of the Interior and other sectors that we still do not know,” he declared.
On the other hand, General Luis Flores Solís is facing a disciplinary process for pointing out that “Cerrón is a public person linked to the previous government” and that “many influential people… we know are helping him.”
