The Secretary General of Peru Libre, was in favor of the re-election of authorities at all levels, including the Presidency of the Republic, in an eventual Constituent Assembly to draft a new Political Constitution.

In statements to Canal N, he indicated that the right to re-election cannot be prohibited if said authorities have the “popular trust” and said that its approval -through a referendum in December 2018- has been “catastrophic”.

“I am a participant that all the authorities must be reelected if they have the popular confidence, it is a way of reaffirming the consequence of the people with their ruler. The effects of having banned it are catastrophic”he expressed.

“You have to be on the court to realize how negative that has been. Finally, if the people do not want to re-elect him, they do not re-elect him”he added, noting that it will be a point of debate before being promoted.

The document was submitted urgently to the office of the head of Parliament, Maria del Carmen Alva (Popular Action), and has the signatures of the head of state and the head of the Council of Ministers.

According to the proposal, a special ballot with the following question will be included in the October municipal elections: “Do you approve the call for a Constituent Assembly in charge of preparing a new Political Constitution?, with the alternatives to the question: YES or NO”.

Said referendum process will be autonomous and independent of the electoral process convened by Supreme Decree No. 001-2022-PCM and “does not modify any rule of the aforementioned electoral process”.

The document states that the constitutional reform bill is submitted for consideration by the Congress of the Republic, with the approval vote of the Council of Ministers, so that a constituent Assembly draft a new Political Constitution.
