MIAMI, United States. – The Mexican low-cost airline Viva Aerobus and the Ministry of Tourism Development of Yucatan (Sefotur) announced the opening of the route between the international airports of Mérida and Camagüey, which will have a weekly frequency every Thursday.
According to The Yucatan Timesthe inaugural flight of that route took place this October 6.
In statements collected by that newspaper, the Secretary of Tourism Development of Yucatan, Michelle Fridman, celebrated the growth of Viva Aerobus, one of the low-cost companies that operates the most flights to the Caribbean island.
“We are excited to see the growth of Viva Aerobus in Mérida. With greater connectivity, our state strengthens its competitiveness, generates more business opportunities and boosts tourism,” Fridman said.
In addition to the new route to Camagüey, the airline also operates regular flights from Mérida to the Cuban capital.
Last September, the Mexican company had announced that the Mérida International Airport would become its sixth base of operations in Mexico.
The Yucatan Times highlights that Viva Aerobus has 15 years of uninterrupted service in Mérida, which consolidates it as the airline with the widest offer in that city.
In that sense, the executives of the airline are confident that with the new flights it will take some two million visitors to Mérida annually.
“With all these new routes we will be operating more than 400 monthly flights to/from Mérida, a city that has become the new home of Viva Aerobus. We will be offering more than 2 million seats a year to all those who wish to visit this beautiful city with the best prices and the newest aircraft in Mexico,” said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of the company.
