In the last quarter, at least four robberies in the capital have gone viral on social media. The most recent occurred in the Villa Flor Sur neighborhood, where a subject, apparently using a firearm, robbed a group of students who were walking through the area.
The robbery was recorded on a security camera located in one of the houses in that neighborhood, located southeast of Managua, and went viral on social media, where Internet users urged that the criminal be identified so that he can be imprisoned and prosecuted for the crime of robbery with intimidation, which he perpetrated against the minors.

A political analyst, consulted by Article 66on condition of anonymity, said that this type of situation, which reflects an increase in common crimes, “has an impact in several directions: on people’s quality of life, increases risk levels and probabilities of victimization and also increases the perception of risk among the population.”
He stressed that this type of situation, in addition to influencing the perception of insecurity, also affects the real security conditions of the Nicaraguan population, which “has effects on the real living conditions of the people, but also tends to increase the levels of distrust in the population.”
Persecution by the regime also “increases levels of insecurity”»
The expert stated that the state of persecution that the Ortega Murillo regime has imposed on the entire population, especially after the social protests of 2018, at the internal level is the main factor that has caused the country to stop being perceived as the safest in Central America,
“To the extent that the State uses violence, especially political violence, it contributes to reinforcing other forms of violence. This can be seen, for example, in the case of violence against women with the increase in femicides, but also with the level of cruelty with which they are committed. Another element is that it encourages impunity among the aggressors,” she said.

He also said that the massive releases of common criminals, which the Ortega regime takes out of prisons without them serving their respective sentences for common crimes they committed, are also part of the factors that increase the levels of insecurity in the country, highlighting that “many of them come out to reoffend, causing distrust and fear among the people.”
So far in 2024, according to reports from official media, the Ortega Murillo regime has released 4,500 common prisoners from the country’s prisons, granting them family cohabitation. Among the beneficiaries, according to journalistic reports from independent media, have been people who committed robberies, robberies with intimidation and crimes related to violence against women.
At the international level, the perception of security in Nicaragua has also been left in a bad state. Countries such as the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Canada have warned their population in their travel advisories of the risks they run if they decide to travel to Nicaragua, including the socio-political crisis that the country has been experiencing for six years and the risk of being victims of common crimes, including robberies, even with firearms, and thefts from homes or vehicles.
