The island journalist enters Colombian diplomacy.
News Colombia.
President Gustavo Petro announced during the most recent Council of Ministers the appointment of Vilma Jay, a journalist and presenter born in San Andrés, as a new Colombian ambassador to Nicaragua. The news was confirmed this August 19, 2025 by Blu Radio, a medium that reported that the process is already in the process of approval before the Nicaraguan government, a previous step to the officialization of the position.
The announcement was made directly by the president and replicated by Blu Radio, which becomes the first national station to disseminate the information. Subsequently, regional media such as The Archipelago Press also confirmed the appointment, highlighting the relevance that a Sanandresan woman has to assume a high -level diplomatic position.
Although the approval of Nicaragua is still missing, the publication of its resume in the official portal of the Presidency will be the step that ratifies its arrival at the diplomatic mission.
Who is Vilma Jay?
Vilma Jay is a renowned journalist in the country for his work as a correspondent of Caracol News and collaborator of the National Radio of Colombia, always from the San Andrés archipelago. He became known nationally for his coverage of Hurricane Iota in 2020, when his voice and reports in the middle of the emergency became references of trust and information.
Her close style, her island identity and the way she made San Andrés visible on the national agenda positioned her as a respected media figure. In social networks it is known as the “reporter of the braids”, a personal seal that reaffirms her pride in the root roots.
What its appointment means in diplomatic terms:
Vilma Jay’s appointment goes beyond protocol diplomacy. It has several scopes:
• Regional representativeness: Colombia opens space to a Sanandresan woman in a high -level position, which symbolizes a greater inclusion of historically remote regions of the political center.
• Relationship with Nicaragua: The context is key. Tensions between Colombia and Nicaragua have been constant, especially for territorial disputes in the Caribbean Sea. Sending to a raizal ambassador, knowing the island culture, can be interpreted as a gesture of recognition towards the Caribbean peoples in the middle of a complex bilateral relationship.
• Non -traditional profile: unlike many ambassadors that come from politics or career diplomacy, Jay represents the arrival of a journalist to the foreign service, which could print a different, more communicative and close style.
