Sebastián Villarejo, national deputy for the Patria Querida party (PPQ) and presidential candidate for the Concertación, expressed about the bill promoted by his caucus, which temporarily eliminates VAT on the products of the basic basket, which is much better than the money is in the hands of the citizen, and not in the pockets of a corrupt government, since people can no longer make ends meet.
“We all realize the situation that people are experiencing today, including lack of food, so we must help facilitate at least access to these essential products, that is the spirit of this law,” he explained.
Asked about the contrary position of the Ministry of Finance, the legislator argued that sometimes reducing taxes ends up collecting more.
“With the fiscal adequacy in 2004, some taxes were reduced, and yet it was possible to increase tax income four times,” said the legislator, assuring that currently “people must be thought of” and that in the event that state agencies continue to oppose, “I invite you to present a proposal and debate, it is very easy to criticize our initiative and not present solutions,” he concluded.
The project planned to be dealt with in the ordinary session of the Chamber of Deputies, initially proposes to provide for the temporary exemption of the Value Added Tax to the products of the basic basket for a period of one year, which includes foods such as: rice, noodles , oils, yerba mate, milk, eggs, meats, flour and iodized salt.
