The delivery of the VIII edition of the Nelson Mandela Awards was held, organized by the Honorary Commission against Racism, Xenophobia and all other forms of Discrimination (CHRXD). The ceremony took place in the Alba Roballo room of the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC).
Applications were open from November 1 to December 8, a period during which organized civil society could apply to individuals, institutions, and public or private organizations.
In this edition, the prizes were awarded to:
- Luisa Casalethead of international cooperation at Mundo Afro
- Danube Football Club
- Nelba Inceta Delmodfrom the Department of Equity of the Departmental Administration of Rocha
- Javier Volontewriter and diplomat
The commission gave a mention to the people deprived of liberty who work in the Industrial Pole of Unit 4 of Montevideo, responsible for assembling the statuettes.
Present at the ceremony were Rosario Rodríguez, representing the MEC’s National Directorate of Education; Marina Sande, Director of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Gianni di Palma, representing the National Institution for Human Rights and the Ombudsman’s Office; Sergio Bañales, Honorary Consul of South Africa in Montevideo; Karla Mateluna, Project Assistant MPA of the International Organization for Migration, who is active in Rocha; and Mr. Alejandro Sagasti, coordinator of Special Programs of the National Sports Secretariat.
The Nelson Mandela Awards have been presented annually since 2015.
