The Minister for Indigenous Peoples, Clara Vidal, declared this Sunday that Venezuelan democracy is unique for its empowerment to native peoples, which has been raised by the indigenous communities of the country for 26 years.
During his participation in the elections for indigenous councilors, he stressed that “we are an example of dignification, visibility, political and democratic participation of our indigenous peoples. We are the protagonists of carrying out the election of 138 councilors, ”Minister Vidal highlighted the presence of social organizations such as Guaicaipuro Chair, Indigenous Federation of Venezuela, Indian National Council of Venezuela (Convex) and Fedecacayaurima.
He recalled the representation present in 69 municipalities in the eight states with indigenous population, specifically Delta Amacuro, Sucre, Apure, Amazonas, Bolívar, Zulia, Monagas and Anzoátegui. “We have 278 candidates participating with more than seven national and regional organizations that are participating in this electoral event,” he said.
The holder for indigenous peoples, emphasized that more than six thousand 500 spokesmen throughout the national territory, through “a beautiful electoral process according to our uses and customs made the proposals of the candidates”, which extended from April 1 to 30 of this year, period during which four thousand 200 community assemblies were appointed. Specifically in Delta Amacuro, eight councilors will be chosen.
“It is reflected in the communes, it is also part of that duty of the indigenous peoples of how we organize, how we live,” said the minister, stating that these elections are due to article 125 of the Bolivarian Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic, which establishes the following: Indigenous peoples have the right to political participation. The State will guarantee indigenous representation in the National Assembly and in the deliberative bodies of federal and local entities with indigenous population, in accordance with the law.
