The hostage of conscience has been kidnapped for 540 days in one of the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance (DAJ), known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua.

On the other hand, Cárdenas pointed out that not only the family of Juan Sebastián Chamorro deserves to be united, but the “more than 225 families of political prisoners need to be reunited.”

She emphasized that “I always have hope, I get up every day, doing everything possible to achieve the release of my husband, who is innocent and I always hope that he will get out, because he should not be in prison. That is why I am not giving up, I will not stop until I see him released, because it is a right that we have as Nicaraguan families; We must never be apart, this is too painful!”
Victoria Cárdenas, who has been married to Juan Sebastián Chamorro for 24 years, reiterated that her “home does not want another Christmas without the presence of my husband. I share the suffering with the other families because what we are experiencing is cruel and unfair.
Chamorro, 51, was convicted in trials that his international lawyer Jared Genser said were riddled with irregularities. During the trial, the Prosecutor’s Office presented 27 police officers as witnesses against Chamorro and six other political prisoners. The only proof that was imputed to them was their participation in a WhatsApp group and some interviews on television.
The prisoner of conscience is part of the list of more than 220 political prisoners who are held captive by the dictatorship after raising their voices against its authoritarian policy; Only on 11 occasions have his relatives been able to visit him in the branded “El Nuevo Chipote” torture center.
