“It is clear that it is an activity that is generating undue profits, that does not respect human rights, the norms in which a formal society must be managed,” he indicated on Canal N.
The head of the SNMPE pointed out that “if we want to attack the problem, we have to go to the control of the explosive, and to the control of those plants, which are all in the coastal zone, (…) in the axes where the gold or copper.”
Gobitz questioned the Comprehensive Registry of Mining Formalization (Reinfo) and explained that illegal mining has expanded in the country “as a result of this lax regulation that allows regional governments to grant permits and not supervise.”
In that sense, he pointed out that, due to the magnitude of money that this illicit activity moves, it could have penetrated the public apparatus: “It is an illegal economy that moves more than US$ 4,000 million, that does not pay taxes, does not have any labor rights. , does not have an environmental responsibility. That is why I have no doubt that they may have penetrated all of Peru’s public institutions.”
According to him, the Executive must discuss the Small Mining and Artisanal Mining Law (Mape Law).
Finally, Gobitz welcomed that the president of Congress has shown himself in favor of repealing the Reinfo: “The future of young people is at stake here, there are 400 to 500 thousand young people and we cannot be legislating based on a minority, which are the owners of the Reinfos, or that minority that are the owners of the plants”.
