New York. – The Minister of Health, Victor Atallah highlighted that antimicrobial resistance is not just a challenge sanitarybut a global threat to security and human development that could become the next major pandemic, if coordinated and coherent international, regional and national actions are not taken.
The official indicated antimicrobial resistance has the potential to seriously affect the health of populations, destabilize economies and compromise the achievements made in terms of global health.
“Antimicrobial resistance does not recognize borders and puts at risk everything from the ability to treat common infections to the success of essential medical procedures. If we do not act decisively, we face the possibility that diseases that are treatable today will once again be fatal,” he noted.

He said that the country has recognized this urgency, “in line with the global vision we project our National Strategy “One Health”with strategic actions focused on that problem.
This strategy is accompanied by an intersectoral agreement between the ministries of Health, Agriculture and Environment, aware that only with multisectoral action can we face this threat.
“We have strengthened the response capacity with a comprehensive network equipped for the detection of antimicrobial resistance and a communication plan focused on the education of the general population, professionals in the health sector and agriculture. But without collective action these efforts will be insufficient.” the official highlighted.
In that sense, he said that all nations, at all levels, and in particular developing countries, require a higher level of cooperation and sustainable investment, in order to ensure an effective battle against antimicrobial resistance.

He stated that the Dominican Republic is committed to continuing to be an active partner in this cause, and in that sense, supports the “Political Declaration on Antimicrobial Resistance” that seeks to invest in the present and ensure the future of all.
Víctor Atallah expressed himself in these terms during a speech at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), on “Antimicrobial Resistance”.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) arises when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and stop responding to medications, making treatments more difficult.
