Victims of the conflict receive 329 assets seized from paramilitaries

The Prosecutor’s Office and the Colombian Public Force handed over to Victim Reparation Fund (FRV) a total of 329 assets that belonged to different members of extinct paramilitary structures and that are valued at 391,032 million pesos (about 82.8 million dollars).

According to a balance offered by the Prosecutor’s Office, this is the largest delivery of goods that are destined for the victims since the justice system was launched (Justice and Peace Law) linked to the dismantling of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia ( AUC), which was the largest and bloodiest paramilitary group in the Colombian armed conflict.

In addition, in parallel, the Justice and Peace chambers of the High Court “imposed, during the year, precautionary measures of embargo, seizure and suspension of dispositive power over assets valued at 345,126 million pesos($72.6 million), a figure also higher than the previous year.

The seizures of assets have been as a result of imputations of almost 19,000 criminal events to their owners for charges such as homicide of a protected person, forced disappearance, forced displacement, gender violence or illegal recruitment, among others, according to the balance of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The AUC demobilized in 2006 After a negotiation process with the government of Alvaro Uribe and, as part of the agreement, the ex-paramilitaries took advantage of the Justice and Peace Law, which contemplated sentences of a maximum of eight years in prison in exchange for collaboration to clarify crimes, but many of the leaders ended up extradited to the United States accused of drug trafficking and other crimes.
