The origin of the great calamities that humanity is experiencing has a name and a surname, it is called the capitalist system, a predatory and destructive model of the environment, the atmosphere and the species, as denounced by the Executive Vice President of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez, during her participation in the World Congress in Defense of Mother Earth.
Rodríguez stated that it is the High Income countries, that is, from the global north, that are mainly responsible for the emission of CO2, and those that have not complied with the investment committed for the technology to capture greenhouse gases, and this would allow the emission of greenhouse gases in the nation to be reduced by 40%.
In that sense, he emphasized the importance of promoting a change in the system and consumption model, to protect key species, promote regenerative agriculture, the circular economy that allow for the consolidation of policies to preserve life on the planet.
“We must change the system, as Commander Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez stated decades ago. Our way of life has to have a different logic of relationship, of sustenance (…) The people of the world must raise our voices, raise projects for life, for peace, against the war that is predatory,” he expressed.
In that sense, he stated that the National Government has addressed climate change from ecosocialism, a different model that must be supported by the people of the south. He explained that Venezuela has developed reforestation activities, inspired by the Chuquisaca Decree, prepared by El Libertador Simón Bolívar, which after 200 years is still in force.
Alarming figures
Vice President Rodríguez expressed her concern about the alarming figures released by the Sixth Intergovernmental Panel on Change. “The atmosphere and the ocean have warmed, the snow and ice are melting, the sea level is rising and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have grown. That summarizes the climate emergency to which we also add the destruction of biosystems in fauna and vegetation.”
Likewise, he expressed that in 2024 CO₂ emissions grew exponentially and the destruction of tropical forests reached a historical record in the last 20 years. In addition, that year was classified as the hottest on record in 175 years. “It exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius,” he said.
“The goal between now and 2050, and all of humanity, is very clear: due to financial commitments and bank credits, the zero emission goal will not be reached. They failed and failed from the global north and that is why this green transition is a farce, which they make at the expense of the sacrifices of the people of the South with horrifying figures,” he noted while stating that 50 of the richest billionaires in the world emit more carbon in just over an hour and a half than the average person in their entire life.
