Sought by the report, Palácio do Planalto did not officially inform the reasons for President Jair Bolsonaro’s withdrawal from participating in the meeting of regional leaders. Informally, one of the alleged reasons for canceling the trip is the President’s Mourning for Mother’s Death, Olinda Bolsonaro, which took place last Friday (21). The president is expected to attend the seventh-day mass in memory of his mother, this Thursday (27).

According to Mourão’s official agenda, his only commitment this Wednesday is the dinner offered by the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, to the heads of state present at the summit. Other details about the agenda at the summit have not yet been informed by the Itamaraty.

Prosul was created in March 2019 to replace the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), which had existed since 2008. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay and Peru currently participate in the bloc. Three South American countries are not part of the bloc: Bolivia, Uruguay and Suriname. Venezuela was not invited to join the group.
