The Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón, meets this Monday 4 at 2:00 p.m. in her office with the President of the National Institution for Human Rights and Ombudsman (INDDHH), Juan Faroppa. At the meeting they will seek to delve into the specific competencies of the INDDHH and analyze the institution’s relationship with State agencies.
It should be remembered that weeks ago, and by way of background, Juan Faroppa in dialogue with the press stated that many questions and various criticisms he received in recent months were a cause for “concern and much pain.” For her part, in mid-March, the vice president told the press that “It is not the first time that (the Inddhh) appears clearly dating and intervening in an issue that has to be transparent and allow, precisely, what happens for those who are in favor of Yes or No”, he affirmed.
“Intervening also implies taking part on many occasions. The campaign (for the LUC) must be allowed to develop in a transparent manner and to the actors who, ultimately, promote one action or another,” he said. “I think that intervening in the way that it did in these cases is really not what I understand, it corresponds to the INDDHH,” said the president of the General Assembly, adding that in this scenario “a quick review of how this institution should function is needed.”
Before the journalists, he also stated that “surely this goes hand in hand with some legal reforms that give it a different framework of guarantees, preserving the technical independence that it must have.”
The INDDHH had requested at the beginning of last March an “urgent investigation” of the cases of police abuse denounced by the Association of Public Defenders. The institution and Adepu agreed that guarantees were weakened in certain arrests and that changes introduced by the LUC “have made it even more difficult to verify” some cases of violence by the police force.
